Vision, Guiding Principles, and Core Commitments

Vision

First Presbyterian Church is committed in its life and mission to the love and justice of God, the grace and Lordship of Jesus Christ, and the communion and transforming power of the Holy Spirit. All who share our principles and commitments are invited to join us in ministry to and with our members, our guests, and our community and world.

Guiding Principles

We believe that First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown can best serve the cause of Christ and His Church by directing our life and activity in accord with the following guiding principles:

We will remain a Christ-centered, Presbyterian congregation within the PCUSA.

We will be welcoming to, accepting of, and friendly toward all persons.

We will be infused with God’s love and with Christian mission and witness to all people.

We will worship God with integrity, reverence, and openness, within the Reformed tradition – which is God focused, Scripture based, and action producing.

We will exercise faithful Christian stewardship of the gifts and resources entrusted to us.

We will be open to, and serve as a catalyst for, shared ministry and mission with Presbyterian and other congregations in the Youngstown area.

We will be a center for ecumenical, interfaith, and community activities.

We will be open to, and serve as a catalyst for, shared ministry and mission with Presbyterian and other congregations in the Youngstown area.

We will remain in the city of Youngstown with a heart for the city, supporting efforts that make the city a good place to live, work, study, and worship.

The core commitments of First Presbyterian Church (see column to the right) will be expressed in the following ways:

  1. Members of the congregation will become engaged with First Presbyterian Church through the core commitments.

  2. The church will organize its life and ministry around these core commitments.

  3. The church’s budget will reflect these core commitments.
